I could probably sum up my review of Khoury’s in one word: Baklava. But because I love Khoury’s and hope to do it some justice here, I will expand on that. You might be asking yourself, just what the heck is Mediterranean food? Well, my meat and potato loving friends–it’s not as scary as it sounds, I promise you. On the menu you will find dishes like Shish Kabobs which are skewers of either marinated lamb, beef or chicken. Or Mhammar, a traditional Mediterranean dish consisting of seasoned chicken, potatoes, and onions. See, that’s not so bad!
Let’s move on to my favorite menu item, Falafel. It may come as a shock to some people, but I am a sort of a vegetarian (I still eat shrimp and salmon), which in these parts can make it hard to eat out sometimes. Falafel is a yummy vegetarian option which even my husband enjoys. It is a pocket bread filled with deep fried balls made from chickpeas and spices. Other options for the non-meat eaters are hummus, stuffed grape leaves, and tabbouleh salad. However, if you can’t quite get on board with any of the dishes I’ve mentioned and you still need your steak, they serve good ol’ T-Bones and rib eyes as well. So you can pretty much bring the whole family and everyone will find something good to eat.
Back to the Baklava. I pretty much insist that you try this dessert. Come on, branch out, dare to be different, get crazy! Your taste buds will thank you. Baklava is a sweet pastry consisting of layers of phyllo dough filled with chopped walnuts or pistachios. I love the pistachio version. Be sure to order it with the also insanely delicious Mediterranean coffee. I’m not too sure what gives it such a unique flavor, but it puts Starbucks to shame.
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention a couple of my other favorite things about eating at Khoury’s. First off there is never a wait for a table, we always just walk in and sit right down, I love that. Secondly, it is a nice family-run place where the service is extra helpful and friendly and they are happy to answer your questions, I love that too. But what I really love, is the Baklava!
